The USA’s men’s ice hockey team beat Canada 2-1 on Tuesday (January 21) to book their place in the gold medal match against Russia at the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Lausanne 2020.

But the biggest event in the American sporting calendar wasn’t far from their minds when they returned to the Vortex, the Youth Olympic Village in Lausanne.

Super Bowl 54 takes place between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs in Miami on February 2, and the battle between the 49ers defence and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his high-powered offence has split the opinion of the young Olympians.

Isaac Howard, the top scorer so far in Lausanne, is backing the Chiefs.

He said: “I think the Kansas City Chiefs because they’ve got Tyreek Hill. He’s my favourite player of all time, growing up I watched him as a kid. I love him so much. And then this kid Mahomes came in and I’ve been a Chiefs fan ever since I was born and he’s our quarterback now and I absolutely love him. I’ve met him once when I was a kid. I got a picture with him and so he’s my favourite guy and I really want them to win. It would mean a lot to, definitely, Minnesota. We all love him. My whole entire family, we all love him and it would be really special and I would love to have it happen.”
But his teammate Hunter Brzustewicz is rooting for the 49ers. He said: “I like an underdog. I mean they’re not really an underdog but everyone likes the Chiefs right now and I’m going to go with the 49ers because of their secondary. Their defence is on fire right now and I don’t see Mahomes getting past them.”
