Swiss cross country skier Siri Wigger claimed her second gold medal of the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Lausanne 2020 with victory in the women’s free sprint at the Vallée de Joux Cross-Country Centre.

16-year-old Wigger, who won the free cross 24 hours earlier, finished 1.47 seconds ahead of Norway’s Anna Heggen. Her winning time was 2:46.40. Maerta Rosenberg of Sweden won bronze.

In the free skiing technique used in cross-country sprint the skis are prepared with only glide wax and forward motion is created by using the edges of the skis, also called skating.

The sprint event begins with individual time trials on the competition course with a 15 second interval start. The fastest 30 competitors advance to the quarter-finals consisting of five heats of six competitors each.

The top two finishers in each quarter-final heat, and the next two fastest competitors from the quarter-finals, advance to the two semi-finals of six competitors each.

The top two finishers in each semi-final heat, and the next two fastest competitors from the semi-finals, advance to the final of six competitors.
