STORY SCRIPT:

Russia took both gold medals on offer on the opening day of Taekwondo competition at the Summer Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018.

Polina Shcherbakova, 17, won the women’s under 44kg following a 12-6 victory in the final over Mireu Kang, 16, from the Republic of Korea. Mexico’s Alicia Monserrat Rodriguez Fuentes, 15, and Lena Stojkovic, 16, claiming the two bronze medals awarded to the defeated semi-finalists.

15-year-old Russian Dmitrii Shishko claimed the men’s under 48kg gold with an 11-8 win against Ulugbek Rashitov, but his silver represented Uzbekistan’s first medal of the Games.  Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi of Tunisia and Seongbin Im from Republic of Korea, both 16, were awarded bronze.
