STORY SCRIPT:

A strong tactical performance from Dylan McCullough in the men’s triathlon secured a first gold medal for New Zealand at this summer’s Youth Olympic Games, Buenos Aires 2018.

McCullough, who’s 17, put in a powerful swim coming out of the water in the joint lead with Italy’s Alessio Crociani with a time of 9.29 minutes.

Crociani was slightly quicker in transition but the pair elected to work together in the bike stage hoping to establish an unassailable lead over athletes stronger over the 5k road running stage.

They went into transition for the final running leg together with McCullough finally losing his Italian rival and establishing a winning lead.

Both men were drawn in by Portugal’s Alexandre Montez. He relegated Crociani into the bronze medal position. But the Portuguese athlete did not do enough to overhaul McCullough.

The Kiwi won by 12 seconds in a time of 53 minutes 27 seconds.

For the men’s individual triathlon at the Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Buenos Aires 2018 the distance for each of the segments is as follows: 750 metre open water swim, a 20,000 metres bicycle ride, and a 5,000 metres run.

The first athlete to complete the course is declared the winner.
