STORY SCRIPT:

The diving competitions at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires got underway on Saturday.

The first event to be decided was the women’s 10 metre platform dive.

A morning preliminary round saw the field whittled down from 35 competitors to 11 with the final set to take place in the evening.

It was Shin Lan of China who clinched the gold.

She was in fourth place after her first dive – a forward 3 ½ somersaults in the pike position – yielded her 63 points.

But she stepped things up for the second of her four dives with an inward 3 ½ somersault tuck dive which gave her 78.40 points.

Shin Lan continued to dominate from there, produced the highest scoring dives of the final two rounds and took the gold medal with a points total of 466.50.
