STORY SCRIPT

As the world awaits a historic meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, the International Olympic Committee can bask in the thaw in Korean relations.

 

For it was at the recent Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games, after years of painstaking political groundwork, that the two Koreas successfully came together under the Olympic flag.

 

At a recent Pyeongchang 2018 debrief in Beijing, Bach told delegates:

 

“With these powerful symbols and gestures in Pyeongchang we have seen how the Olympic Games can open the way to dialogue. How they can open the way to a more peaceful future. In this way the Olympic Winter Games Pyeongchang 2018 has opened the door for peace talks on the Korean peninsula at the political level. It is our hope that despite the ups and downs that have accompanied these talks at the political level in recent weeks the door to a more peaceful future on the Korean peninsula is now open”
